Booking a holiday dog groom in Lakeway

Published October 6, 2026 · 6 min read

If you want your dog groomed in Lakeway before Thanksgiving or Christmas, ask for the appointment three to four weeks ahead: the last week of October for Thanksgiving week, and Thanksgiving week itself for the days before Christmas. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year and Christmas on Friday, December 25, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's federal holiday calendar. I groom one dog at a time, so the weeks before those two dates are the first to fill.

When should I book a holiday dog groom in Lakeway?

Book three to four weeks before the week you want. That is the realistic booking window I give every client, and weekday appointments in particular tend to fill that far out. There are only a handful of slots each day in the van, and most of them belong to dogs on a recurring rotation, so a holiday week has fewer open slots than a normal one, not more.

Here is what that window looks like against this year's calendar.

If you want the groomAsk for it between
Thanksgiving week, Monday, November 23 to Wednesday, November 25October 26 and November 2
The week before Christmas, Monday, December 21 to Thursday, December 24November 23 and November 30

If you are reading this after those dates, ask anyway. Cancellations do open up, and I would rather tell you a slot exists than have you assume it does not.

My dog is already on a recurring schedule. Do I need to do anything?

Check where your next appointment lands before you assume it covers the holiday. Many clients in Lago Vista, Lakeway and Leander are on a four, six or eight week rotation, and those intervals run on the calendar, not around it. A dog groomed on Tuesday, October 13 on a six-week rotation comes due on Tuesday, November 24, two days before Thanksgiving, and the next appointment after that is Tuesday, January 5.

That dog is in great shape for Thanksgiving and well past fresh by Christmas. If December matters more to you, the fix is a conversation, not a scramble: ask me now whether to move one appointment, and we can look at it together. If you are not sure what interval your dog's coat needs in the first place, I covered that in how often your dog should be groomed.

How close to the holiday should the groom be?

For most dogs, the groom should land in the same week as the holiday, a few days before guests arrive. Close enough that the coat still looks finished, far enough ahead that a missed slot or a schedule change does not leave you with nothing.

There is a second reason not to leave it to the last day. The American Kennel Club says dogs thrive on routines, and that the bustle of holiday activity at home or on the road can disrupt them. A groom on the morning the house fills with people stacks one big event on top of another. A groom a few days before gives your dog a quiet appointment and a normal day or two afterward.

Why a mobile groom is easier in a holiday week

A mobile groom takes the drive out of a week that already has too many. The van parks in your driveway with its own water and power, so there is no car ride, no drop-off and no pickup window to fit around grocery runs and airport trips. Your dog is the only animal in the van, groomed start to finish, then walked back inside.

You do not even need to be home. With latchkey service, a background-checked member of the team collects your dog, grooms them in the van and returns them; you just need to be reachable by phone during the appointment. I groom in gated Lakeway communities like Rough Hollow, Flintrock Falls and The Hills regularly, so share the gate or guard instructions when you book. The Lakeway service page has the full neighborhood list.

Keeping the coat holiday-ready between the groom and the guests

Brush, do not bathe. A full groom already includes a double shampoo bath, blow-dry and brush-out, and the American Kennel Club warns that bathing too frequently can strip natural oils from the skin and coat, leaving them dry and brittle. An extra bath the night before the party works against the groom you just paid for.

What helps instead is a few short brushing sessions. The AKC says most dogs only need a few brushing sessions a week, that long-coated breeds often do best with daily brushing, and that mats commonly develop behind the ears and under the legs. Check those two places first. If you do find yourself needing to bathe before I see your dog, the AKC's advice is to brush out dead hair and mats first, because bathing a dog with mats only makes the hair tighter and harder to brush out.

Double coats in the holiday months

A double-coated dog often arrives at the holidays mid-shed. The AKC says that in the fall, dogs shed more heavily to get rid of the summer coat and make room for a winter coat, so a Lab or a shepherd can be leaving hair on the couch right when company is coming. A groom timed into that shed takes out a great deal of loose undercoat at once.

Please do not ask me to shave it to stop the shedding. The AKC is clear that you should not shave a double-coated dog, because shaving does not eliminate shedding and it damages the topcoat. I wrote more about this season's coat change in an earlier post on why dogs shed more in the fall.

The day the guests arrive

Give your freshly groomed dog somewhere quiet to go. The AKC recommends setting up a private space, such as a bed or crate in a quiet room away from the festivities, and taking breaks before your dog gets overwhelmed. If your dog is nervous with new people, the AKC's advice in helping your dog deal with visitors is not to force interactions and to tell friends and family what your dog needs.

That matters to me for a selfish reason too. A dog who spends the evening in a quiet room comes to the next appointment calm, and a calm dog is the whole point of grooming one at a time.

A few practical notes before you book

  • Travel plans change. My cancellation policy asks for at least 72 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule; inside 72 hours the fee is 50% of the service total, and same-day cancellations or missed appointments are 100%. If your holiday plans are still moving, tell me when you book.
  • Regular hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, with Saturday and Sunday by appointment only.
  • New to the van? Have proof of a current rabies vaccination ready. First-time clients get a few extra minutes at check-in.
  • The full-service groom is one package with everything in it: bath, blow-dry, brush-out, haircut, nails, ears, sanitary trim and paw pads, teeth cleaning, and a bow or bandana to finish.

One last thing. The AKC notes that the handling that comes with grooming allows early detection of lumps, bumps and skin irritations. If I notice something on your dog before the holidays, I will tell you, and what it means is a question for your vet, not for me.

If you are in Lakeway and want your dog done before Thanksgiving or Christmas, the soonest step is the booking form or a text, and the earlier the better.
